One more idea of how to revitalize Detroit would be to offer free rent for businesses. Businesses will invest in making their sites appealing and help revitalize their neighborhoods, and pay taxes. It would attract employers, clients, employees and create the economic environment that Detroit needs. It is a low investment for the city of Detroit with a high return to make Detroit more livable. Spanish International serves several clients based in Detroit and I would consider Detroit for our next Spanish center.

Our goal is to create a relaxed, energetic and fun environment where we can all enjoy the experience of learning Spanish.
Spanish classes at Oakland University, Rochester, Michigan Fall 2010
This fall 2010 I will start working as an adjunct Spanish professor at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. It is very exciting to start a new program in a university with the reputation of OU. I will be teaching Spanish for beginners Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays in the morning. It is the most popular Spanish classes and there will be about 30 students. The challenge as a Spanish instructor is twofold: 1. to convey the importance of Spanish nowadays for their professional and personal lives; 2. to teach strong foundations to start speaking Spanish, listening to Spanish, reading Spanish and writing in Spanish. My approach is very conversational and I encourage students speak Spanish in every class. I will keep you posted.

Yesterday I met with a new Spanish student as she wanted to learn our approach and methodology of learning Spanish. She is a project manager at a large consulting firm with very little Spanish training. She stated she is willing to invest her time and resources to become fluent in Spanish. She had tried Rosetta Stone and other methods but was very disappointed. I explained to hear that all of our classes are based on conversational Spanish. Students start speaking Spanish from the first day and continue to do so in every Spanish class. From the Spanish conversations we explain the grammatical Spanish concepts and vocabulary. Each class and each conversation is focused on a particular Spanish concept that we discuss, explain and use in real Spanish conversations. She really liked the approach and is very motivated to start next week, twice per week. I love motivated students willing to learn and expand their horizons by learning to speak Spanish.

Spanish culture
Business Spanish classes are also about Spanish/Latin culture. Businesses, corporations and other organizations hire us to learn conversational Spanish. They want to understand the Spanish market and community and thus, they need to learn Spanish/Latin culture and Spanish/Latin customs. Spanish is a reflection of the culture, customs and traditions, and we incorporate cultural learning in every Spanish program we facilitate. To learn business Spanish and conversational Spanish without integrating the Spanish culture and customs is hard to do, if not impossible. Spanish family, Spanish meals, Spanish work, Spanish business, Spanish religion, etc. … all reflect the culture and if you learn Spanish within a context and you will be closer to understanding the Spanish language, culture, and our community, in Detroit and beyond.
