spanish language center in metro Detroit

Dear neighbors,

The purpose of this post is to present a new business to educators, students and investors. First, let me tell you a little about my background. A native of Madrid, Spain, I completed my MBA at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio and shortly after relocated to Detroit. While working for corporate America, I saw a great opportunity for Spanish language education, which led to the founding of Spanish International, LLC. For nearly six years now, I have taught Spanish for corporations, community groups, and individuals. Additionally, I am on faculty at the University of Detroit Mercy.

As my client base and interest in the Spanish language has continued to grow, in spite the challenging economic climate, I have decided to open Spanish International – Spanish Language Training Center. This will be metro-Detroit’s first and only location devoted solely to the highest quality instruction of the Spanish language. My goal is to create a contemporary center that offers intensive and rigorous training in an upbeat and friendly setting…. a place where people look forward to coming not only for the language skills they develop, but for the social enjoyment as well. The initial target market will be adults, however, tutoring and special programs will also target school age students.

The second stage objective is to develop Spanish International into a franchise system to meet the growing need for high quality Spanish language training throughout the country. If you are interested in being part of this exciting venture from the ground level and are either as an educator, student or investor, please contact me and I would love to meet to discuss this opportunity.

Saludos,

Joaquin Frias

Global Trade Mission

The Global Trade Mission (GTM) is an innovative, hands-on learning experience preparing Southeast Michigan high school students to participate in the global economy by simulating the preparation of an international trade mission. Participating students will work in cross-district, cross-county teams to create a product and global business plan which will be presented to a panel of business experts. This year’s GTM will include students from Genesee, Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne counties!

The GTM Oakland will take place, March 5 – 7, 2009, at Oakland Community College in Auburn Hills.

The GTM Macomb will take place, April 23 – 25, 2009, at the Macomb Educational Service Center, 44001 Garfield Road in Clinton Township.

Through a partnership with Automation Alley, Macomb Intermediate School District, Oakland Schools and Oakland Community College, approximately 200 students at each location will work in teams to respond to realistic ‘Trade Challenges’ or industry specific projects. The Trade Challenges are created to highlight ‘emerging sectors’ and are developed in cooperation with area companies for rigorous and relevant application to theoretical classroom learning.  Highlights of the event include international video conferences conducted with the assistance of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Commercial Services and career exploration through engagement with business, education and government volunteers. The GTM is patterned from the national model of the Virtual Trade Mission and is designed to immerse students in an authentic business experience that allows collaboration with a diverse team to respond quickly and professionally to a global business challenge.

Over the course of the program, students:Teams meet with Facilitator Elisa Hopper

- Acquire critical workplace skills
- Develop cultural diversity awareness
- Obtain techniques in problem solving and project management
- Explore emerging careers in Southeast Michigan
- Assume corporate roles to guide their work strategy and business

Traditionally taught Spanish courses do not equip you to developing a degree of fluency. This is the most common quote from my Spanish students. Mostly very well educated adults, in a corporate setting.

From my experience training professionals in some of the best companies in the world, the following are the best practices to speak Spanish, and my approach.

1. Speak it.

Read a dialog aloud between you and your instructor. Don’t worry about not understanding the content… or the pronunciation. Just read it aloud. Get used to feeling weird listening to yourself speaking a different language. Who cares?

2. Re-read it.

Read what you just said it (for yourself). Take more time to read it at your own pace trying to get the gist. Realize that when we speak we get the general idea, and do not process every single word to make sense of what is being said.

3. Understand why it is said the way it is said.

This is the grammatical part that most of us are not particularly eager to study. By learning the logic behind it, we can start making sense of the pattern and start building our own short sentences.

4. It is a life-learning project

As a native Spaniard, English is my second language and I am learning every day. Take advantage of every opportunity to get exposed to Spanish. Listen to TV, software, radio, read papers. Don’t worry about not understanding the content. How long does it take to master the basics? For my dear friend and student, Alan, a U.S. attorney working for a top Mexican law firm, basics is a very high basics. I mean, every person’s expectations are different. Accent? What accent?

5. It is easy. To give up. Absolutely. But it is a shame because when you reach a certain level, a level you feel comfortable with, you start seeing the world not in a different light, but in multiple lights.

It is doable and like anything that is worth it, it takes practice, patience and will. The more you invest, the better focus you will gain of this multicolor and multi-lingual world. Enjoy it.
